Installing Webmin from its maintained Linux repository

control-panels, servers

Webmin is a web interface for system administration. Installing it gives an authorized administrator another way to manage operating-system services; it does not automatically build a fully configured shared-hosting platform. Virtualmin is a separate hosting-management layer for that purpose.

Check access and requirements

Use a supported Linux server that you are authorized to administer, with a tested SSH or console recovery path. Review the operating-system package state and take a backup before changing an established server. Decide which trusted administrator addresses may reach Webmin and how its HTTPS certificate will be managed. Do not use a fixed old Webmin RPM from a historical article.

01 Install Webmin from its maintained Linux repository

  1. Download the official repository setup script and inspect it before running:
    Command example
    curl -fSL https://raw.githubusercontent.com/webmin/webmin/master/webmin-setup-repo.sh -o webmin-setup-repo.sh
    less webmin-setup-repo.sh
    sudo sh webmin-setup-repo.sh
The script configures the maintained repository and signing keys for supported distributions. Read its prompts and any detected-platform errors.
  2. Install through the operating-system package manager. On a supported RHEL-family system use sudo dnf install webmin. On a supported Debian-family system use sudo apt-get install webmin --install-recommends. Use only the command appropriate to your distribution.
  3. Review the package result and confirm the Webmin service is running. Keep SSH available while configuring the web interface so a firewall or certificate mistake does not lock out administration.
  4. Allow the required management connection, normally TCP 10000, only from trusted administrator networks where practical. Check both provider-level and guest firewalls. Avoid a broad firewall disablement.
  5. Open https://server.example.com:10000 using your actual hostname. Verify the server identity and configure a properly trusted certificate. Follow the current Webmin authentication setup for your authorized administrator account.
  6. Review administrator permissions, two-factor authentication options, session security and update policy. Give additional administrators only the modules and privileges their work requires.

Common questions

Does Webmin replace every hosting panel?

Webmin manages system services. A complete multi-domain hosting workflow may require Virtualmin or a different supported panel. Choose the architecture before installing overlapping tools.

How should Webmin stay current?

Use the maintained package repository and your operating-system update process. Schedule changes, retain recovery access and verify the interface after updates instead of repeatedly installing unrelated standalone package files.

Confirm the expected result

Confirm a fresh HTTPS login and a harmless read-only task such as viewing system information. Test that your independent SSH or console path still works. Check that package updates can be obtained from the intended repository and that management access is limited as planned.

Resolve setup problems

If installation fails, inspect the package error, repository configuration and signing-key setup. Do not bypass signature verification or download an old RPM just to make the command succeed. If the panel times out, check the service listener and targeted firewall rules. For certificate warnings, verify identity and correct the certificate rather than normalizing unsafe access.
