Test shipping with a small matrix of realistic addresses and carts so you can verify zone matching, eligibility and totals before customers encounter an unexpected charge or no delivery option.

01 Build the test matrix
Choose one address in each supported zone, a boundary postcode and an unsupported region. Include a standard physical product, a special shipping class, multiple quantities and a mixed cart. Add cases around any free-shipping threshold and a coupon if the offer uses one. Use test addresses that do not expose a real customer's private information.
02 Run the checks
- Use a protected staging store or a controlled checkout test that cannot dispatch goods or take unintended payments.
- Start with a clean cart and enter the first complete shipping address.
- Record the available methods, selected default, cost and tax.
- Change the address and confirm the methods recalculate rather than retaining a stale result.
- Repeat for each cart and address combination, including an ineligible case.
- Complete representative sandbox orders and check the stored shipping method and address.
Why does my administrator test differ from a customer report?
Your account may retain a saved address or cart, and the browser may use cached state. Repeat the test logged out with the same products and address structure as the report. Also check customer-role pricing or shipping extensions that deliberately change eligibility.
When should shipping debug mode be used?
WooCommerce's core shipping debug tools can help identify the matched zone and bypass rate caching. Use them in a controlled environment and disable them after diagnosis, because diagnostic information can appear on the storefront. Third-party live-rate methods may have separate logs and test modes.
03 Check the fulfilment promise
Ensure the method names, pickup instructions and public delivery policy match the tested configuration. Core flat-rate and free-shipping methods do not automatically purchase labels or guarantee a carrier service. If a carrier extension is used, confirm its credentials, packaging assumptions and supported destinations.
04 Keep repeatable evidence
Save the expected and actual results with timestamps and configuration notes. Repeat the affected cases after changing zones, classes, coupons or checkout extensions. A documented matrix makes it easier to distinguish a regression from an address the business never intended to serve.
